Do you worry about your pet when you’re away?
Many people do, and for good reason. Pets can get separation anxiety, become restless, and engage in destructive behavior when left alone. If you’re looking for ways to keep your pet happy while you’re away, we’ve got some great tips for you.
Keep reading to learn how to make sure your furry friend is well taken care of while you’re out of town.
1.Give Them Something to Do…
One of the best ways to keep your pet happy while you’re away is to make sure they have plenty of things to do. This means providing them with toys, bones, and other chewables to keep them occupied. It’s also important to give them a comfortable place to sleep and relax. If your pet is used to being active, make sure they have plenty of space to run around in. A tired pet is a happy pet, so exercise is key. Now remember, keeping a dog occupied is more than just making them run around. You’ve got to stimulate their minds too so they don’t get bored so easily. A morning training session can help dogs stay calm before you leave for the day.
2.Give Them Some Attention…
This one might sound a bit “weird”, but another way to keep your pet happy while you’re away is to give them some human interaction. This can be done by hiring a dog walker or sitter, or even by asking a neighbor to pop in and check on them. Pets crave companionship, so it’s important to make sure they feel loved even when you’re not around. However, if you can’t stop by the house on your lunch break, or if you’re going on a long trip, it may be better to let a friend or family member watch them until you return.
3.Give Them Some Place Safe to Chill Out…
Is your dog crate trained? This is especially important for anxious dogs, high-energy dogs, and puppies. Because once they get used to being in the kennel, they’ll love being there. In fact, dogs will relax in their “special place” during the day, instead of causing havoc all over the house. Why is this important? Crates give dogs a “den” where they feel safe, secure, and at peace. A good thing to do is to make sure they have enough toys and treats in there too.
This way they don’t go out looking for stuff to do… like chewing your shoes, going through the trash, or urinating all over the place. But what if you have a BIG dog? The same thing works for them. Just create a designated space for them in your house with food, water, toys, and a baby gate that keeps them enclosed.
These are just a few simple ways to keep your pet happy while you’re away. Separation anxiety is a real problem for many dogs, so it’s important to do what you can to make sure they’re comfortable and safe when you leave.
